Due to legal requirements, we have to keep some records for many years. We still have archived text documents from the late 80's. Many of them have been transferred multiple times from one backup medium to it's replacement. One of the older IT people here remembers her first task was running a program on a CP/M machine to convert EBCDIC word processor documents on single density 8" floppies to ASCII text on Northstar 5.25" floppies. Later they were converted to IBM 5.25" floppies, tape, CD and network storage.

Since quite a few documents are in old formats, anything that reduces easy access to them is a PITA. By our standards, Word 97 is a johnny come lately -- though SP3 allows access to Word 6.0 which predates Word 97.
