Longhorn: No promises
``Ballmer said Longhorn represents a large "step function" in invention which would be disruptive for companies and partners, but that periods of intense innovation, followed by incremental improvements, were the nature of the software industry.''

Yes, indeed, it is a revolutionary step forward compared to current MS offerings. This time they spent 2 1/2 hours more in designing the `security' infrastructure and 10^6 more hours in designing the 3-D GUI (that may ... not be there).

Now they are only putting the final touches in the new query based file system that it has been in the back of Billy's head since win nt3.51. Unfortunately the final touches went to the IDEAS and not to any tangible R/D.

Why on Earth does it TAKE them SO LONG to implement an OPERATING SYSTEM? They are NOT inventing anything, they only need to sit down and DO the work! By the time the longhorn is out (if ever) UNIX will have evolved one more generation and Linux two or three.

But again, it took them 20+ years to finaly get a PC os right... so no surprises here.

Maybe they've just given up even generating future vaporware promises. They must feel really down over there.
