It's gonna be a long hot summer for Microsoft (and anybody who continues to use IE).

Microsoft has basically admitted that they cannot make ActiveX secure and functional at the same time. Otherwise, they would have done it by now. They promise a solution (XP-SP2) will be RTM in August, which means it won't be widely distributed until September. And they're still not addressing other platforms. I think a few businesses are still running Win2K.

They have until then to figure out how to disable some or most functionality without completely pi$$ing off every poor idiot who ever put ActiveX in a web app. Look for them to put out release notes for "developers" (I use the term loosely) on how to modify their applications so they'll continue to work.

In the interim, the vicious little bastards smell blood. We're already seeing more and more creative exploits. Talk about freedom to innovate, well, Microsoft has certainly given it to the virus writers.

Political conventions, Olympics, war, terrorism, crashing computers, ... This could be a "Summer of '68" kind of year.

Oh and for all you Microsoft apologists who think it's all because Microsoft is the biggest target, consider this: You could essentially hijack two thirds of the WWW if you came up with successful Apache exploit. Instead, vulnerabilities are discovered and patched before they are ever exploited. Even unpatched systems are rarely compromised.

Is this ZDNet Talkback not the worst web messaging app you've ever seen?
