Of course you can. Hold down the Shift Key, right click on the Windows Update Icon, and click "Run As". Enter the credentials of an admin account and Windows udpate will be launched under the admin account you typed in. No logging off or on required.

To make it easier they could have implimetned a feature in the home version of XP (they could STILL do this in an update) that prompts a restricted user for credentials when they try and run system functions.

THIS is what I'm talking about. A small amount of education from the beggining would make XP users like you aware of these little things. Instead Microsoft has generated millions of people like you who harbor false preconceptions about what Windows can and can't do.
