MS involved in the original LDAP?
Two general-purpose, standards-based directories:
1) X.500: ITU and ISO efforts were merged to form the X.500 standard, etc.

2) LDAP: around 1990, the forerunners of LDAP were developed: DIXIE and DAS; then RFC 1497 in 1993 was the first LDAP specification. It was followed by other RFCs (version 2 of LDAP). The first and best-known implementation was the University of Michigan (U-M) LDAP, for access to X.500 servers.

LDAP as a standalone directory service: in 1995 the SLDAPD (Standalone LDAP daemon) was developed at U-M; no requirement for X.500

Recently LDAP Version 3 was developed: Mark Wahl of Innosoft and others created RFC 2251 and related specifications.

What I've heard about MS is that it bastardized the LDAP protocol and many non-MS clients had problems interoperating with it.

When did MS started working on LDAP?
