AD is a wrapper around LDAP. MS was involved in the original LDAP protocols with IBM and Netscape (and my guess is Novell too) with other corporations at the getgo.

AD ties in NT authentication with LDAP directory services. And no, it's not based on Novell's technology, but on a shared protocol.
