Blame Sun marketing for your confusion.

And yes - there are some decent Java applications (and even some that use Swing, Sun's much touted UI API). Most Java development software is written in Java, and don't suck.

The problem is that because users have this perception that Java is slow (generally based out of earlier versions of Java), very few companies develop 'End User' Java apps, leading to a vicious circle.

If you doubt me, think on this: If Java is fast enough to run on most mobile phones, do you really think it isn't going to cut it on a modern desktop?
