Plug-in doesn't work with Windows XP either...
... if that's any consolation.

On my home machine, I used the Microsoft tool to remove the JVM completely. Then I downloaded and installed Sun's. All settings are correct, having checked the FAQ and 3 or 4 different Sun advice pages, no error messages anywhere.

But when I go to any site with Java, including Sun's test page, I get a message saying I have to download Microsoft's Java. If I refuse, nothing happens; just the red-x-in-a-box.

If I accept, I get a Microsoft page saying I can't download Java because it's not available any more. But Sun's JVM starts to work on the original page.

What's happening? Your guess is as good as mine.
