The artists? Their future is marketing direct to the consumers.
THAT's why the RIAA is so afraid of P2P. Technology like iTunes
has the potential to make them obsolete.

"who cares if MS's WMA is no longer used? It's not that
great a format." Microsoft cares.

They dominate the desktop, so their market share has no where
to go but down. The will never dominate the datacenter, with
what is still basically a desktop operating system. Not much
growth potential there.

They have failed to make much of a dent in the mobile phone
market. Wince is a. too fat for phones, and b. not wanted by any
of the manufacturers. Not a likely growth market.

Set top boxes, maybe. Everything they had done so far has
failed, webtv, etc., but they have signed a deal with Comcast for
some set top boxes.

Music and video. That's the markets where they may be able to
grow. Anything that threatens those markets threatens
Microsoft's future.

Just when MS starts making some headway along comes Steve
Jobs with some real innovation and throws up a major
speedbump.
