The Slashdot link that talks about the fix has an additional link that reads "more on the situation" that outlines the speed with which the patch came out: less than 24 hours.

The Bugzilla link has a long discussion about (1) how dangerous this was and (2) how dangerous external protocol enabling was anyway. Seems many folks didn't feel it was worth addressing at that time, for various reasons which did not include either laziness or inability to make the fix.

And by the way, the only idiots around here that need exposing are the ones that accuse others of having no technical savvy. Re-read the Bugzilla post and you'll discover how real programmers discuss possible holes in their software.
