- That arguement might have made sense
-
The reason it doesn't make sense is because one, you assume that Windows will maintain marketshare forever and ever, and two, because the weaknesses of that one platform which 95% of computer users use weaken the programs developed for that platform. It weakens them more than it strengthens them. It is much more difficult to secure a Windows platform. It is much more difficult to maintain a Windows platform. A Windows is slower than most other platforms. A Windows platfor is more expensive, in the short AND long run, than many other platforms (especially Linux and BSD).
Now I'm not saying you can't make money developing only for Windows, at least not at the moment. But as time drags on and more people see the advantages of the other platforms, you'll be losing customers to other programers who are more willing to give their customers what they want. You won't lose them all of course, because there are situations when Windows is better, and even though it's taking a while for MS to gain the inertia it lost from its early days, Windows will eventually improve to make sure it won't lose all marketshare.
But as long as you're happy with the amount of customers you get developing only for Windows, I guess you won't mind the defections to other platforms. Because other programers will defect too, which will work to your advantage because you'll be able to fill in the void they leave.
As a side note, I wonder if you've looked into such cross development tools such as Kylix, QT, and GTK. Is there anything those don't provide that MS only tools do? - Posted by: Michael Kelly Posted on: 07/12/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
