The thrust of Kalam's speech was that the nation should achieve self-reliance in software needed for critical weapon system development.

This isn't a promotion of open source as better, so much as the ability to get away from "proprietary" (mostly American) interests.

But yeah, he likes open source, so he's on OUR side. Who cares if the same motivation that lead him to create nuclear weapons (make India feel like a BIG power) is the same one that leads him to reject all things foreign (American software companies).
