MS prevalent in schools

You are right in this, but currently the college that my daughter attends requires all papers be written using MS Word and all presentations be made with PowerPoint. Although I have Windows XP, none of my apps are MS. I asked how would they know what you use, my apps print out the same. She said they are required to submit floppies with the hard copies. What kind of message does this send to the students and what are they going to continue to use when they leave school?
