Actually
for the average PC user.... yes it is.
CLI!?
What is that?
Why do I have to type in a command to make this work?
Where is my point and click icon so it works?
Why is this so hard?

The average PC user at the first mention of terminal will automatically think of either plane, bus or train. Then you tell them to use a Command Line Interface (terminal) and all hope is lost! It's to hard, it's confusing. And the list of exscuses go on and on and on.

The strength of Linux is also it's achilles heel. I use it daily, but I am not an average PC user. My family uses it as well. But everything they need is already installed. If there is more software they want... I get the call.

And herein lies the real reason Linux is not going to take the home desktop by storm soon. I would like nothing more than to see Linux eat 20-30% of Microsofts market share in the home arena. But it's not going to happen yet. Not until a couple things occur:

1 - Corporate America starts the adoption of a Linux desktop.
2 - More applications are ported with the same level of functionality as Windows, but the security as UNIX / Linux / *BSD.
3 - Administration becomes a little bit easier. (Granted it has made massive strides in the last couple of years...)
4 - Users become more literate with not only PC's but security and proper PC usage. (Never will happen since the natural selection process does not kill them.)

Yes I know I have advocated Linux on the desktop. Yes I use it and my family uses it. But the bottom line is I am not an average user nor are my family members. For corporate use the Linux desktop is more than ready now, because there is a support system available to take care of the administration. But for the average home users, not yet, sorry guys but even I will have to make concessions where they are due.
