Rethink Palladium
I think MS should consider putting Palladium back into Longhorn. However I think the project?s features should be scaled back and focused primarily on dealing with malicious code. MS could then work with competitors over interoperability with their own secure computing schemes. I believe market pressure will compel force ISVs and other vendors to adapt Palladium and other secure code standards, even as the OS handles both secure and regular non-secure code.

I think a lot of the issues people had with Palladium were political. People were terrified that Palladium would have given MS unprecedented power and would have locked out competitors. I believe when MS develops technologies, it really needs to factor this into its thinking. While MS may feel the need to out do its competitors, I believe it needs to consider the effect of trampling them ? in particular the smaller ones. The fact of the matter is if a company does this, it builds up resentment (not just among competitors) and it can cause problems later down the line. So while I don?t believe MS should give away the farm to its competitors, I think the company should consider ensuring when it makes significant strategic moves, it doesn?t appear to be bulldozing over other companies. If MS will be able to say, ?I didn?t force anyone out of the race. I simply out sprinted all my competitors.?
