Because you haven't written your Congressman about it
If nobody complains in written letters or even emails, then Congressmen do whatever the big software companies pay them to do. That's how the DMCA, Copyright Extension Acts, and other crappy legislation gets made. There is nobody to blame but yourself.

So far, I've written 18 letters to people like Fritz Hollings and Lamar Smith, who are firmly in the pocket of the software companies. They have sent some polite replies, but I doubt that it amounts to a drop in the bucket compared to the mail they must get on abortion and the Ten Commandments, so more action is needed (hint, hint).
