First of all, you don't need a JVM to use Java. You could, in fact, compile it - there are Java compilers out there.

Second of all, Java's very similar to C++. I seriously doubt it's the language that's causing problems.

Third of all, just because you fail to appreciate the advantages of open sourcing doesn't mean they don't exist. If they can get more developers to join that way, then they've just expanded their pool of resources.

I daresay that if Netscape hadn't made their browser open source, their death would've been permanent, and we wouldn't see people using Mozilla today. If Sun does it right, open sourcing can be an advantage.

Last of all, I DO think poorly written java apps are the source of most of the problems. I've been following good computer engineering practices, and I havn't had any problems with Java's performance.
