.Net is not the elephant in the room...
... Sun's income is.
We know their problems with profitability.
One of the few reliable things they have to sell is Java.

If they make a mistake with Java, two things happen:
- they lose a major (if secret) source of revenue
- IBM, their main competitor, takes charge more strictly than Sun ever did via its tentacles in open source, and does what it can to make Java more IBM than Sun friendly.

Let's not lose sight of the sole subject of discussion here: corporate revenue. Java has monetary value, and the question is, who gets to make the most money.
