All current interperted languages.
That is not all, current implementations of java have been found to be close to the speed of C!!! And it is currently considered equal to or faster than C++.

Considering the many safegaurds Java has to lower the chance of programmer mistakes, the ease of programming in OOP, and less work to manage memory; Java is a better choice for big projects, even if it was a little slower.

Also, remember, C and C++ are basically done. There won't be too many milestone improvements in their future. But Java's VM is still advancing and being developed with each version being better than the former (IMO Sun is actually being a bit lazy about it).

Finally, it is important to remember that the speed of a program is more heavily dependent on the skills of the programmer than the actual language.
