I can still remember when people argued you should write in assembly.
But, you won't find any real-time systems written in assembler code any more. For a big project, you just can not do it, you need a higher level language. I think for many real-time projects, the same is also true, for C++ vs Java. With C++, you have to spend too much time with memory allocation and the type system. I still see programmers treating integers and pointers as logicals. And, remember, not all real-time systems need to update every milisecond. There are a lot of systems that can update every second or even every 5 seconds. Combine that with the fact that processors are getting faster all the time, and you will find it hard to argue that Java is too slow. Also, Sun keeps chipping away at performance. It will get to the point that the performance is less than 5%, and maybe even only 1%. Even using Java, we have 10 times the performance we did 5 years ago using C++. That is not enough????
