MS Broke the Law
Microsoft was judged, by a US court, to hold a monopoly. By definition this means they will pay big fines when they abuse their position and break the laws in any country.

The following are the tip of a very large iceberg ? incidents of foreign companies who, when caught, admitted they were wrong and paid up ? in America.

One thing I would ask you to consider: Europeans did not make a big fuss about any of these.

In Philadelphia the Justice Department charged SGL Carbon Aktiengesellschaft (of Germany) with violating the Sherman Act. In addition to the $135 million fine against the corporation, the CEO agreed to pay a personal $10 million fine -- the largest antitrust fine against an individual.

Dutch chemicals group Akzo Nobel Chemicals pleaded guilty to charges of having fixed prices in the United States and of having conspired to divide up the market for monochloroacetic acid. The company agreed to pay a $12 million fine.

AstraZeneca (Corporate HQ in London, UK) agreed to a $355 million settlement in civil and criminal charges related to the prostate cancer drug Zoladex.

French chemicals group Rhodia (based in Paris) pleaded guilty in a Montana court for having illegally stored rubble containing phosphates is to pay a US fine of $18 million dollars for pollution at a site in Montana as well as clean-up costs.

There are many other examples ? try using a search engine next time.
