MSNBot lives
"But that experiment petered out and until now it has had nothing further to show publicly."

No, MSNBot is alive and well and hammering sites:
http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum97/107.htm

There is also a technology preview. Seems to be much improved over the old MSN but still some shortcomings (e.g. misses a spelling suggestor, Geocities ranking high in commercial search terms)

"MSN's Medhi said the new search site for now will drop Yahoo's paid-inclusion program for natural search results, in a move to answer people's concern about the commerciality of free listings."

Sounds more like an attack on Yahoo's paid inclusion program. (i.e. by paying Yahoo you automatically block yourself from MSN).

MSN should include these in searches on Commercial keywords, since they are clearly commercial sites. I hope the above statement was just a mis- explanation of what they're doing.
