yup
"Linux growth of say 25% means their EXISTING base grew 25%, NOT that they captured 25% of the market."

Proof? Links? Where did you get this from?

"When you have a small fraction of the market, any gain looks huge when expressed as a percentage."

You don't mean that numbers don't mean everything do you? The number one cheerleader for the ultimate FUDmeista of bogus "statistics"?..With their sorry self-funded "studies"? Amazing contradiction!

"Microsoft is deployed on more servers everyday than Linux has ever seen in a week."

Currently yes, but who knows about tomorrow? Microsoft has years on linux, and yet linux is already a major competitor. What will happen 3-5 years from now?

"But MS is also grabbing UNIX market share, Novel, and other NOS. So far, Linux simply hasn't competed well against Microsoft beyond the shrinking UNIX server market."

And so is linux. You have provided no proof, and we have seen many articles of M$ Windows replacement. Many foreign countries and many businesses are in the process of making the switch. And this is to everyone's benefit.

"It has not made significant advances on the desktop market either."

Talk about that has just begun for the first time this year. Their plans have yet to be implemented. Keep in mind that you are talking about IBM, Sun, HP, Red Hat, Novell..Microsoft simply wil not remotely be able to stop these companies from their plans. I could see five weenies in their mommies' basements. But not these big cats. So desktop linux is a definite eventuality.

"In many ways posts like yours do more to harm Linux than anything any detractor ever could. People do read the talkbacks and when they see someone in "the Linux camp" make statements they know are complete wrong/false it raises red flags. "

Foolish nonsense. No one seriously deploying linux reads and takes seriously these forums first, if at all. So if a Windows luzer came out slinging mud making the "Windows camp" look bad..you mean that'd be a serious consideration for you over whether you use Windows or not? Hypocritical ridiculousness..
