Yep
People just get upset at Microsoft, which I can understand, for a company that has 59 billion in cash, they act so cutthroat like a corporation barely surviving. But anyway linux is still not a viable solution for some companies, in particular mine, who needs to be able to point a finger at someone should something go wrong. Its scary for some to buy something that has no real owner. Also the conversion of linux isn't going to happen in a day, or a year. Some pioneers are finally breaking off and trying it out, but the industry is still wrapped into Microsoft. I really hope the best for linux, but I don't think it will need my hope. As the society becomes for computer oriented and literate and an OS such as linux with the GUI becomes less of an technical feat for many, we will see microsoft finally get some competition when many of us thought it was impossible at a point in our lives. To think a "free" operating system would have the ability to compete with the software giant. And yes, to the microsoft trolls out there, they do compete. Do you think Microsoft likes losing these contracts? They are very arrogant, but they are intune which their financial stats, and everytime they lose a contract, they are losing that potential contract.
From what I've seen, both of the OS's have their strong points. Linux has less security issues, is free, and becoming easier to use by the day with more and more applications written for it. Microsoft has the advantage of having a huge customer base, and anyone who can use a computer has expierence or knows how to use Windows. Granted it has its bug, it still works as an OS. Linux has the disadvantage of being David vs. Goliath, and the disadvantage of still having the rep of being a geeky tech hobby rather then the robust but yet still rather user friendly (with the GUI) it has become.
It comes down to cost, is it more cost effective to go Linux? To retrain all of the employees to use a new system, new software, new methods and have that annoying opprotunity cost of putting employees through class instead of working doing whatever they do. Linux will have to add value in the long run before companies will flock to it. There experimenting companies I believe will show that it does, and then OpenSource will get a much bigger boost. And it will add value if implented correctly. Microsoft may continue to be the dominating software company out there, but at least now it isn't the only option. I use linux and windows, I like both of them, but if more mainstream software for linux (like games) I'd probably go and wipe windows from my house. At work I'm still a windows user, and probably will be for a while, but I'm happy too see some competition out there. Its a good thing, whats the point in flaming each other here? The idiots give a funny prespective sometimes (Mike Cox and his unemployment rep are hilarious)
