Children learn many lessons from their parents, often one's unintended.
My beloved mother married and abusive drug adict. Then after many years of constant violence..she married and abusive alchoholic followed by many more years of never ending madness and pain. Finally she married a Christian and of all my so called dad's I like him the least:)

So when dear mom tells me she found God and I MUST also. Well you have to give it too me that mom's choices are not the one's I'm eager to follow.

As I said in an earlier post. Parents often try to mold their children. Sometimes it works...other times if fails. Sometimes, like you the do the wild oats thing, and return to the fold. Other times they find their own way and do not. I'm not saying they end up terrible, unproductive wrecks (As many a person of faith would like to believe of those who do not share their values or ideal) but rather just different and still productive GOOD people.
