A global perspective
"Other than that, there is no legal way to stop spam (as in
bulk unsolicited e-mail) any more than you can legally stop
junk mail being posted to you."

Whilst I'm in agreement with the general proposition of
your post please accept that a number of countries already
have ways to deal with junk postal mail.

For example it is illegal for unsolicited junk mail to be place
in a physical mailbox in Australia with an "Australia Post
mail only" sign on it. In addition I must opt-in to stamped
direct mail in Australia.

Whilst Dell, an American company, ignores my pleas to be
left alone, significant penalties exist for companies
ignoring this legislation. I really should get onto the
relevant authorities re Dell's behaviour:-)
