- Apple did NOT steal from Xerox! Geez, people!
-
Look people, let's get the facts straight. Microsoft didn't completely steal from Apple; they extorted enough of the early Mac OS to reconstitute it into the digital garbage we now call Windows. They held up the release of software for the Mac OS (what would eventually become the Office juggernaut), demanded that Apple cease development of MacBasic in preference of MS's own MSBasic, and demanded that Apple turn over key portions of the GUI code. If Apple didn't comply, MS would hit the delete key on all the programs that were ready for release.
Steve Jobs, on the other hand, paid a fair sum of money to Xerox to see what they were doing with GUIs. He took a bunch of Apple programmers to the Palo Alto RESEARCH Center (PARC) to see what Smalltalk looked like. Jobs liked the overall concept, but the implementation was too propeller-headed for his desired market, so he and his programmers took a completely different tack to the GUI concept, and it became the Macintosh. Read this site for more info, including letters and quotes from researchers at PARC: http://www.mackido.com/Interface/ui_history.html
BTW, even if Apple did steal from Xerox, that still doesn't make it right for MS to do so. This cannot be used as rationalization for MS, even if it were true, which it absolutely is not.
Get your facts straight, Apple-bashers, before you spew lies to back up your stunted opinions. - Posted by: red_five Posted on: 08/01/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
