Bounty Hunting

I can think of a few ways to stop spyware and trojans one being - bounty. If we make it known to all them hacker kids that there is some sweet cash to be made to hunt down sources and destinations of illegal ad and spyware there will be dos-like activity on the net to get them.

Also, target the source of cash. Enact laws that prohibit payment for information obtained illegally. It would be the responsibility of the buyer to examine how the information was gathered. They would have to maintain records and, perhaps, report to a central registry whom payments were made to.

Unfortunately laws are vague when it comes to 'spying' and as long as companies, including Microsoft, see potential revenues they will not enact to prevent the technologies. I would argue that Microsoft has been attempting to create technology for which it alone has control over; where, when and how it is used. In so doing MS has created security holes that others discover and take advantage of. This will continue until MS gives up on the push/pull concept of distributing its message (ie. generate revenue).

When the cash dries up the commercial ad and spyware will be gone.
