I agree with everything but one thing
Linux will pass Microsoft because Open Source software is faster in terms of releases. Microsoft may come up with the good faster but they can't release them to quickly otherwise they destroy the profit making machine.

Now this presents a problem. Microsoft may have some excellent ideas on the shelf for release 5 years from now but what happens when Linux takes computing a differnt direction in 2 years leaving that good patented idea usless off on the shelf?

Well I think that this will force Microsoft to move and really hussle. You will see version coming out more often with new innovation, some stupid and maybe some good. But that's the game Microsoft has avoided playing by being a monopoly. It's going to be very interesting some 10 years from now I think.
