Different types of users

You're right.
Many Windows users do not want to get into the workings of the software at all, while many who don't like Windows think getting more control makes using the device easier.

If you want software to do as much as possible then Windows is made for you. I've read that some people setting Linux desktop strategy have realized that this type of user-friendliness is necessary to increase Linux's popularity.
So they're trying to be as much like Microsoft as possible.

If you're lucky, by the time it's possible for you to switch away from Windows, you won't see any difference. Except that Linux will still be working to catch up. These projects tend to be slow.

(You'll be surprised to know) Windows follows Apple, Linux follows Windows. Steve Jobs' followers may straggle, but they get there.
I hope that when Linux rips away the Apple buyers who paid extra just to escape Microsoft that there's enough to left to keep a good company going.
