Windows advantage
Windows' main advantage is that the vast majority of programs are compiled and sold as win32 programs and have been for some time. No question, that is a huge advantage.

Now ask yourself, if Linux had the same number and quality of programs that Windows has right now, which would people choose? Linux, if you ignore what programs can run on it, beats Windows in just about every way imaginable. This is why Linux has such stout supporters.

However, that "number of programs" advantage is hardly a minor detail. People use software at work and it happens to be win32 software. Now Linux comes along, it's a great OS and all, but it can't run all the programs you need. Well if that's the case, then Linux really isn't an option to them, is it?

Linux has everything I need at home, so I use it there exclusively. Linux has *almost* everything I need at work. Everything except our company accounting/tracking/sales lead software. Which everybody in our company needs. So Linux is not an option for us now. Not until that software becomes platform independant, which it will be in about 18 months. So in 18 months we'll have an important decision to make, and right now we're leaning heavily in the direction of Linux. But of course things can change in 18 months, so we'll see.
