Java remains a greatest hit!
Great hits can't remain on top of the charts forever but they do get played over and over again.

The beauty of Java, aside from it's splendid object oriented implementation is it's cross platform architecture which, despite rumours to the contrary, remains a truly successful innovation. It also is fabulous in that it brings together all the complicated niche elements of the network seamlessly making the creation of secure network applications reasonably easy.

It has it's place. For creating platform specific utilities, C and C++ will remain the best tools but who ever said you could only have one tool in your toolbox, (besides Dremel).
