It isn't as bad as you say.
Resource hungry - It isn't bad. And don't use Swing (that is bad). Use AWT when possible and SWT from IBM if you are really worried about it. Also IBM's VM is less resource hungry.

Slow - Look at the latest stats for the latest VMs, it is only noticably slow with float points. For everything else, it is more than worth the benefits of easy of programming, and the OOP design. Again, if it means so much to you, use IBM's VM.

Platform Independant - Well, lets say it is stuck to the Java platform. But the Java platform can be ported to many other OSs. Sure, one port might have more/less features than another, but the core and most extensions (like Swing) are the same.

Java looks pretty bad when you take it piece by piece, but as a combination, it is the best we currently got. For the level of checks and balances it has to hinder programmer errors, it is well worth the extra resource usage. For the ease of implemeting OOP, debugging, able to write once and run in many places while not having to recompile and documentation, it is well worth its faults.

Personally, I like Java, but am not too proud of Sun. They produced a great product, but don't take it seriously enough or are not very good at managing it. Development/Maintenance wise, their VM lags behind other vendors. They just treat it as a trademark. Because Sun owns Java many equate Java products to Sun. With this the competition already has a uphill battle, and thus competition is on the low end. This in turn has kept Java's development at a slow pace.

Is C better, of course it is, but only in someways. One could argue that assembly is even better, but again, only in some ways. Currently, as a package, Java is a pretty good deal.
