- Got it twisted around a bit there....

Java was supposed to be an improvement over C++ - it has been touted as safer as you do not have the direct control over system resources as you do with C and C++.
Besides, internally Sun engineers have been said avoid Java for system utilities like the plague. There was an internal memo kicking around - telling management in no uncertain terms that there was no way Java would/could/should be used due to stability and speed issues.
