1984-- Today
Morality? What about present-day reality?
Better start looking suspiciously at your computer right now. The little home spy tube that watched every move of the "hero" in the book "1984" is rapidly deploying.
No, I don't mean "Carnivore" and other government spybots that can keep an eye on you--though it's good to be aware of this growing taste for snooping.
The recent flap over Microsoft's "self-updating" software is one indicator. Without your permission, XP and Vista make changes in the operating system. Which makes the original install disks useless, if not "illegal" in Microsoft's eyes.
Other commercial eyes are watching, too.
I tried to use a trial version of "HyperSnap", a screen capture program, beyond its trial expiration date. Of course it informed me time was up.
It also instantly connected me to the company website which sternly warned against "illegal use" of its software, which it had just detected.
Now I wonder just who and what else is keeping an eye on my computer habits. I sure as hell am not going to install a camera.
