its all about the APIs ... how can a real OS keep 'em secret?
They should have mandated that any streaming media server and client that holds more than, say, 2% market share must support a particular standard, lets say MPEG2 or MPEG4.

But the problem is MS using its leverage over the market to subvert standards ... they did it with Kerberos, LDAP, media, HTML, Java, and the list could go on and on!

And support must be equal for both the mandated standard and any other closed, proprietary standard.

That certainly is part of the problem ...

The mandated standard must include a full set of APIs so that any client can be used with any server provided they both meet the standard.

That is 90% of the remedy IMO ... they can create as many hokey standards as they want as long as they make 'em "open" to all to use. Force this and the incentive to create new propriewtary standards goes away.
