It's the wrong venue

Prosecution for CRIMINAL offenses are covered under your "unbiased government entity" premise. Civil offenses were originally supposed to be handled privately. That's why there are criminal and civil courts and specialty lawyers. One size does NOT fit all!

The irony is that the same people screaming for the government to handle cases like this are the ones wanting the government to protect their privacy. Don't you see that a law like this gives the federal government even more power to go through your computer at will? Or forcing the chip manufacturers to have a "phone DOJ" feature built in? While checking for "illegally" obtained files, do you honestly think that if something else catches their eye that they won't act to prosecute?

And to answer your software question: PIRATING is copying media for illegal resale. No one here has ever condoned PIRATING music or software. They just want to be able to use and SHARE the media they paid good money for in the first place.

Putting it back on the self-righteous: how many of you have installed any Microsoft single-license product on more than one computer (like for your family or friends)? Under the BSA, this could get you a big fine. Under the porposed law, you could get hit with TWO fines and jail time.

Can you honestly say that you are willing to be Bubba Sue's b***h for putting your copy of Windows XP on your kid's PC or for making a copy of a Hansen CD?
