I haven't seen an ad or popup in ages
I highly recommend a program called Proxomitron... I've been using it for over a year, and it blocks popups, certain types of irritating javascript (like link obscurement and disabled right-clicking), plus it kills sounds on webpages (I hate webpages with fricken sounds playing) and in ads, and it kills most banner ads and annoying Flash ads.

The neat thing is, if there is something you want it to block (and if you're tech-savvy enough to know what scripting element is causing it), you can add functions to it pretty easily.

For browsers I mostly use Opera and the tabbed IE overlay MyIE2 -- though if you try MyIE2, I strongly recommend against enabling any of the plugins that come bundled with it... most of them are kind of questionable, and at least one is known spyware. However, if you just make sure they're disabled, it's just fine.

Just an FYI, for those of you who are tired of the annoying side of the web.
