Why don't you try
to state your case with examples instead of a generic statement that means nothing. There are so many windows shops in the world that I find it hard to believe they are all "forced" to be using windows for one (large corporations and all of the internet came up on Unix and then Linux). That's just propaganda that many companies have proven wrong. They've paid their dues, the door has been wide open for ANYONE to move in for several years but I don't think there was anyone ready for it. Apple made the move to x86 but maybe too late to do as much good as they'd like. Linux has had NO lack of support and this "grass roots" movement now has the biggest corporations behind it. Speaking of monopolies, IBM is doing a lot for open source. Linux folks don't mind cozying up to a company that was prepetually in antitrust court for a few decades? It's double standards in play.

Anyway, using Unix and Novell and other solutions, Windows has been by far the least costly overall, gives the most productivity and users love it. These attempts at talking about Microsoft crashing and insecure blah blah is out of the 90s. PCs are solid now if you don't buy the bottom of the barrel. Windows server 2003 (vista's kernel ) is rock solid and stands up to any linux server in the minds of objective professionals. that's why the server 2003 and IIS 7 market has been noticably increasing over the last few years so well. A windows solution offers the absolute best and easiest network admin tools. Managing clients could not be easier. Patch mgmt is free with WSUS that works flawlessly.

i don't get statements like this. SQL Server 2000 and now 2005 are in Oracle's league and offer great BI capabilities out of the box. Server 2003/2008 are rock solid and moving ever closer to technology nobody is even close to reacing in terms of relieving sites of even more admin work. MOSS is a tremendous set of integrated technologies that is gaining unified communications including voice right out of any app. Open access to the lan from any web browser anywhere. The cost of implementing MOSS over 5 years is less than half the cost and more than 5 times the functionality of GAPE.

People find it tremendously easy to do their work when they have all of the tools and data they need at their fingertips. This is easily achieved with MOSS. No massive custom solution with 5 new programmers and 3 more system admins for an average size shop. I've always gotten full ROI on any windows capital investment over the course of time. And then some, which is mostly from much higher productivity and freedom of users to have exactly the data they need real time.

economies of scale, out of the box integration, solid software.

Linux, if you care to check on sites that track vulnerabilities has nothing on Windows. nada. Vista is safer and finally vendors are getting it together to write to their secuirty oriented model and safer driver model to create an even safer ad more robust system. Vista on it's own merits is a great OS that takes us a long way toward managed code system.
