BTW: I don't think Microsoft is scared of anything, they've taken on bigger competitors than Linux is now.

Name one.

Name a single OS which crossed multiple HW platforms with a unified API allowing HW differences and OS considerations to be abstracted out of applications design. Only OSes to come close in my mind is SysV and BSD.

Linux is a phenomena, I'm a big UNIX fan but Linux is less fragmented than Unix ever was!
