Microsoft is not laughing, Linux is costing them millions, and forcing them

to do a lot of things they do not want to do. It could cost them billions eventually and even destroy their basic business. You seem to forget that for most businesses and government, Linux / OpenOffice will do just fine, and has many advantages long term. Microsoft is very worried. They are fighting tooth and nail everywhere to deny Linux even one small foothold on the desktop. Why would Microsoft offer huge discounts for an OS that was NOT viable???? Microsoft does not know where the tipping point is, and the do NOT want to find out.
