Think about it this way.
Anything that doesn't cost money to produce can be distributed for no charge. That's pretty much just open-source software. You can't have everything for free; just the things you can make for free.

This puts companies like IBM in a good place, because they can make their main profit off of hardware, and distribute the software for free. A hardware company could thrive with such a strategy.

But an open-source software vendor doesn't have to sell hardware to survive. Open source software doesn't have to be handed out for free. Most of it is, but it's the freedom that counts, not the price. That's why companies like Red Hat can even exist.
