the basic idea...
is not that socalist...

It's real simple.. the code itself is a commodity, but work done to it is what is "sold." Nothign is completly free. You pay for customization, service, support, etal. Just the base product is available for free or cheap.

From a business POV< it does make some sense. SUre you lose money in the area of R&D, but 1) the R&D costs are shared amoung many entities, just the cost is reduced greatly or neglagible (except for those that have vry tightly controlled projects). 2) with service and maintenance, you have a perpetual income. Rther than making a huge gain early on then tapping out (with th eneed to develop "new features" and market upgrades, you can have a slow, but continuous product improvement and a perpetual income stream.
