Why I see it as important
Your trivial example for maintaining a website to this in not so trivial. I know from experience here where my downloads would software. Yeah registering a domain is a small investment and that $20 a month you talk of for space on server farm is very limited. Limited in the fact that they don't allow for mass downloading. It's purely for display of information. If I started having more than a gig in downloads occur my site would get shutdown which is why I don't have site anymore. For that kind of service I'd be paying about $185 per month which give me a static IP address. This brings me to my next point my home service has dynamic IP address and there for can't be registered so a home based website won't work unless I buy corporate internet account.

Now $200 a month to run a business is pretty cheap though but why pay $200 a month when you don't have to? There is P2P that does it for your for nothing. I can have my website explain what I'm doing and if you want my software I give the filename, the MD5SUMs and direct you to any P2P service out there that I want to use. In time it could migrate to other P2P services. The cost me is purely my home internet account running at $35 a month. So that $150 a month in my pocket off the start.

Now consider music. Much smaller in size than software but also much more popular. Anyone can do this from thier own home. ANYONE at no extra cost than just connecting to the net. Now tell me why wouldn't you use this?
