Re: even if many use it illegally...
by killing P2P entirely, you cut off a very important channel for independant bands to get heard, outside of selling their souls to the record industry.

Where's the evidence? Besides, how does one find an independant band one hasn't heard of on p2p? Basically, you get results on p2p by performing a keyword seach like "Frank Zappa."

I pay under $8 a year to register my domain name. Another $20 a month would buy me space on a server farm somewhere where I can put up a commercial website. (I use my Roadrunner account and a FreeBSD box to host my personal site.)

It would be a trivial exercise for an independent band to maintain a web site to host all its free downloads. And you can promote a web site, and actually sell stuff on it. Can you promote your music on p2p? Can you sell stuff on p2p? Can you have a message board on p2p? Can your fans experience a sense of community on p2p? Can you publish your gig schedule on p2p?

So tell me why p2p is important to any artist, much less an independent one?
