Wrong! MS so wants to do this that they have bough customners like Cornell
if the cluster is running on Linux, it is a whole lot easer to have the desktops running on Linux.

There's two separate markets. First is the OS that runs the cluster. If MS wants to play here it needs to let go of the integration and tuning. This space will be all about leveraging custom hardware tweaks to improve performance going forward.

Second is the applications layer. This will be built on standards to allow customers SW investment to move between vendors implementations of the HPC cluster. MS couild clearly add value here without needing to own the OS. But they just can't figure out what they want to be when they become a real computer SW company and they keep tryting to control every niche and make it 100% MS dominated to make themselves feel safe. Hogwash, its gonna be their downfall as they only have so many people cycles and the entire industry scales faster than Redmond's labs.

Well, Microsoft just can not sit by and let these kinds of things develop. They are in an all out war to deny Linux a critical mass on the desktop. They MUST have a product in this area. They could afford to spend billions to keep just 1% of desktop market share from going to Linux.

Perhaps you missed the fact that these are not desktops! Nobody spends several millioin dollars on a desktop. These are compute servers, leveraging them is all about SW. You are right, MS could focus on the SW development and job launching side and ignore the OS side, or they can try to fragment it and look foolish. These guys would have built the cluster toolkit using Windows if they wanted to, they want more control than MS is willing to give up and thet'a the basic price of entry for MS ... are they ready?
