They have been
trying to break into the supercomputing field for years now, through their clustering solutions.

Who in his/hers right mind will opt for an MS cluster to do numerical computing, while Beowulf, mosix and the rest have broken this ground 7 years ago?

I agree that they only need to have a visible presence in this area. They have way too many open fronts at the moment: fixing up their w2003, Itanium-2 w64, longhorn, .net?, litigations, etc.

I don't think they can pull all of them off, unless they change miracolously somehow.It took them almost 20 years to come up with a relatively stable 32 bit PC os. Now they are day dreaming 64 bit SMPs and clustering...

If they had focused to just what they are good at (office apps) and had left OS / networking to the *NIX community, many people would had much less missery (and more money in their pockets) right now.
