What are you objecting to?
Are you upset that Microsoft is doing the research or are you upset that they are patenting their process? People have a right to the fruits of their work, certainly, and it should not matter whether they do very fine work and accumulate more fruit or lousy work and collect little fruit.

Bill Gates gives away his money by the billions at that and little can be said to differentiate the practices of giving away the profits from selling the code and giving away the code in the first place. The former has a more discernible metric.
