Here's an idea that will work NOW!
Want to stop spam NOW?

Want to do it with EXISTING protocols and technology TODAY?

Tell the ISPs to get their heads out of their collective butts and add PTRs to their MX records! I can't tell you the number of MX records you can't do a reverse lookup against if you only have the IP address!

Then, MOST e-mail packages will allow you to reject the mail if the you are unable to verify the senders domain.

Take a look at your spam, most are made-up domains anyways, they don't actually exist!

We had "Reject mail if sender's identity cannot be verified" active (Novell GroupWise) on the Internet Gateway - and it WORKED!

All the mail with fake domain names were STOPPED!

Unfortunately, many stupid ISP's don't know that when you create a MX record for a mail server, you should create a corresponding PTR in DNS for reverse lookup so features like that above will work!

So much mail was being block that was legitimate that I had to turn it off - even after a week of calling up ISP's and telling them to turn it on.

check out a domain to see if it has it turned on at:

If your domain doesn't have a PTR - IT SHOULD!
