What is web services?
In brief, it's a way to get around corporate firewall systems that block everything except ports 80 and 8080. The idea is to run all of the usual IP services (ftp, IM, file access, remote procedure calls, remote desktop, etc.) over HTTP and without having to put the service providers on the DMZ.
